Aerial Plaza

Carl Cheng

This artwork was planned as part of The Promenade Master Plan for the redevelopment of The Promenade between Ocean Boulevard and 3rd Street. Taking flight as the theme, Carl Cheng’s images, objects and spaces focus on the interplay between landscape, art and architecture. His photomural canopy is a freestanding artwork located in close proximity to paving, which was designed to explore how the landscape of Long Beach can and has been envisioned from contrasting vantage points. The plaza also includes a 5′ tile mosaic by Cheng of the Hubble Telescope map of the primordial universe beyond the “Big Bang” using present day technology.
