Serenity Shines in the Dark

LaJon Miller

A once dark alleyway, LaJon Miller brightens up this highly trafficked space with a tranquil, three-paneled scene of Koi fish swimming amongst water lilies. Their vibrance is illuminated with the addition of solar powered lighting that increase visibility and safety, while highlighting the artwork. This is in alignment with the Downtown Long Beach Alliance’s goal of beautification and safety improvements of public space in the Downtown area. LaJon has expressed that his “idea behind this mural is to illustrate a serene and calm vibe. I am a big fan of Koi fish and I enjoy the calmness and peacefulness that sitting next to a Koi pond can bring. And since the closest public space to view Koi fish swimming is the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at CSULB, I thought it would be cool to bring that vibe to the Downtown area.”
