When businesses shut down and boarded up in despair, we painted messages of hope and encouragement for our community’s mental health. This project, birthed in pandemic darkness, called us to arm ourselves with masks and brushes soaked in bright pigments of inspiration to spread light. The arts were critical in paving the road towards recovery and once again artists demonstrated how essential they are to our city.
The Arts Council for Long Beach commissioned artists to paint over boarded-up businesses along Broadway and Fourth Street’s Retro Row as part of its “Keep Arts Working” initiative. The project, COVID Cover-up” featured artists from Long Beach and Los Angeles county who were asked to paint inspiring images that lift up the community.
