Every month, the Arts Council funds wonderful community art projects and professional development opportunities at up to $1,000. Three projects received funding last month:
- Rancho Los Cerritos’ 2016 Summer Concert Series brings hundreds of visitors of all ages to the Rancho’s backyard to enjoy live music. The first concert took place June 26 with the jazz groups Al Threats and Amusement Park. The next concert is July 24 from 5:30–7 p.m. with the blues bands Ray Goren and Generation Blues.
- The longest running and most popular Summer and Music (SAM) event, Buskerfest, closes out the summer as local and regional bands perform on four stages set up on flatbed trucks with minimal plugged-in equipment in the East Village Arts District. Attendance is expected to reach 4,500 and will take place on Saturday, September 3, from 5–11 p.m.
- The Art of Healing book tour is an opportunity for refugee and immigrant communities to recognize intergenerational trauma and heal through poetry and spoken word. The tour started with a workshop on July 22 facilitated by The Art of Healing author Peuo Tuy and artist June Kaewsith. It culminates in an artist showcase on July 28.
