Nick Marks

I am a local pianist who teaches piano, composes original instrumental music, collaborates with other musicians/bands, and regularly performs.

When composing, my artistic vision is driven by a desire to push the boundaries of experimentation while still sounding and appearing engaging and accessible, such that the average listener would detect no hint of experimentation. In other words, I strive to simultaneously effectuate and mask experimentation.

The primary way in which I approach this goal is to write songs in odd time signatures (unusual rhythms). While these rhythms might otherwise sound foreign or perhaps even disjointed or just weird, I strive to make them sound completely normal by layering smooth, emotionally evocative, engaging melodies over them. The best real world example of my style would be Penguin Cafe Orchestra, who are undoubtedly my biggest influencers. As such, I consider my style as avant-pop.

In terms of teaching and collaborating, I engage in many different genres such as classical, blues, jazz, rock, and pop.

Sun Pulse by Nick Marks - Live Piano Solo (2019)
I consider Sun Pulse as my best work (or, in the very least, it is my personal favorite). It is an ideal representation of my artistic vision as I wrote it in 15/8 (which is a very rare rhythm) and accompanied it with an engaging and emotionally evocative melody.

Closing song for my set at Dry City Brew Works in Wheaton, IL, 12/20/19. This place is the best, great drinks and generous staff, glad I got the opportunity to perform here! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy. Videography: Mom Follow my on IG @fruits_and_leaves

Shoe in Field by Nick Marks w Johnny and the C Tones - Live @ Kulak's Woodshed (2020)
Shoe in Field also nicely encapsulates my penchant for experimenting with rhythms as it features a ten-beat pattern (4/4+6/4, which is very rare). It also features an improvised and playful melody that personifies joyfulness. Lastly, this video displays my ability and desire to collaborate and perform with other musicians.

Dinosaur Dance by Nick Marks - Live @ Long Beach Artwalk (2020)
Dinosaur Dance is another playful and engaging original song that displays both my melodic tendencies and improvisational skills. More significantly, this performance is in the heart of East Village where I am interacting with some of the passers-by; immersing myself in the community is very important to me.
