Chip McCarthy Furniture Artist

The weathered toolbox my father and I built when I was five sits in my workshop today—a reminder that my urge to create started early. While others see beautiful objects and say, “I want that,” I’ve always said, “I could make that.”

After 25 years as a Creative Director in automotive marketing, working with brands like Porsche, Lexus, and Acura, I found myself craving something more lasting than fleeting digital experiences. While designing sleek marketing experiences by day, I spent evenings in my dust-filled garage building furniture, each piece reminding me of what I truly loved: developing woodworking skills and creating things that last.

In 2015, I shifted from corporate success to authentic expression, applying strategic design thinking to hardwood furniture that bridges function and art. My approach combines marketing-honed problem-solving with intimate craftsmanship, developing bespoke solutions that consider how people live, the spaces they inhabit, and the legacy they want to leave behind.

From console tables for awkward spaces to whiskey cabinets that anchor memorable evenings, each piece is specifically designed to evoke delight for its owner and dovetail effortlessly into its environment. The five-year-old building that first toolbox couldn’t have known he was starting a journey that would span decades, but that instinct to create, solve problems with my hands, and build something meaningful remains the constant thread that has found its most authentic expression.

Backgammon Game Table (2024)
The table is made from solid African Mahogany. I designed the top with a curved profile to create a “soft” landing for forearms. The center panel sits flush with the mitered frame and lifts off to reveal a recessed game board underneath.

Nautilus Table (2023)
This award-winning side table was inspired by the fascinating work of Jere Osgood (1936 – 2023). It was my first exploration into bent tapered laminations. Inspired by the legs' organic character, I finished the height of each leg at various lengths and created a Nautilus-shaped tabletop.

Gazelle Table (2024)
The idea for this side table originated from a pencil sketch. The table’s focal point is the miter joint between the top and the legs, while the subtle curves enhance the table’s sophistication. I built the table using bent tapered laminations of solid Cherry.
