CALL FOR ARTISTS
The Residency Project @ 880 is now accepting proposals for our August 2018 Artist Residency!
Based in Pasadena, the Residency Project @ 880 is a week-long program comprised of two symbiotic elements:
- an artist residency for an established professional artist, and
- a fellowship residency for a degree-seeking student.
880 serves as a space for creative research and practice, collective living, and arts-based learning.
The Residency Project @ 880 provides an opportunity for a professional artist-in-residence to work with the assistance of a dedicated fellow, and for that student fellow to work alongside a professional in their field of interest.
Although we don’t expect our artists-in-residence to produce a “final product,” applicants should have a specific project in mind that they plan to work on with some concrete ideas about how they will conduct research and/or make visible progress.
We pair you with a student fellow whose interests and skill sets align with yours! The fellow will live on the property for the duration of the week-long residency and will assist you with your artistic research and professional practice.
The property at 880 boasts a quaint Craftsman home built in 1914, with an upstairs loft studio and a backyard garden urban oasis. The upstairs loft is a spacious dry studio with ample sunlight during the day. The studio is an unfinished space with insulated ceilings, exposed rafters, and subflooring. It is a raw space that invites experimentation.
Our artist-in-residence has access to a private guest suite inside the house, including a bedroom with queen bed, closet, a full bathroom, and a private study. Common areas include a sunlit foyer/reading room and dining nook, a living room, kitchen, laundry facilities, an expansive deck with an outdoor living room and dining area, and a generous yard. You are welcome to use your study, the upstairs loft, or any shared area of the house for your research and practice, including the backyard and garden.
You and your fellow are also free to utilize off-site locations to conduct research and work. 880 is located within a short radius of many of Southern California’s most notable arts and cultural institutions, including:
- The Huntington Library and Gardens
- Norton Simon Museum
- CalTech
- Art Center
- NASA JPL
- Pasadena Museum of California Art
- USC Pacific Asia Museum
- LA Arboretum
- and countless others!
880 is also less than 15 miles from Downtown Los Angeles, and there is a public transit line that can pick you up just blocks from the house and take you into the heart of the DTLA Arts District.
WHO SHOULD APPLY
Established professional artists with an inquisitive nature and a deep interest in developing their practice further in an unconventional space.
