Jillian Thompson

Jillian Thompson (b. Detroit, MI) received her BFA from Grand Valley State University and MFA from California State University Long Beach. She is a multi-disciplinary artist explores narrative of womanhood and self expression. Thompson’ art practice takes shape as photo collages, wearable objects, and sculptural installations. Her work has been exhibited at Emerge Galley (Greenville) , MCLA Gallery 51 (North Adams), Angels Gate Art Center (San Pedro) and Alt Summit Conference (Palm Springs).

Interested in creating a utopian space where Black women are not only celebrated but also empowered to thrive. Through images and sculptures, Thompson seeks to translate the experiences of Black women, focusing on celebrating their luxurious mindset beyond mere material wealth. This entails recognizing and honoring their inherent value, confidence, and self-respect, challenging traditional narratives and stereotypes.

By providing a setting with vibrant atmosphere, music, and a good vibe Thompson fosters an environment where women can feel seen, valued, and celebrated. She believes in showcasing the versatility and creativity inherent in Black culture, encouraging individuals to embrace and own every aspect of themselves boldly and unapologetically.

Fluctuating between the indexical and the symbolic, Thompson’ art practice takes shape as photo collages, wearable objects, and sculptural installations. Her artistic endeavors serve as a catalyst for empowerment and self-expression, reminding Black women that confidence, authenticity, and self-love are the ultimate forms of luxury.

By juxtaposing everyday material objects with imagery and lyrics from contemporary Black culture, her artwork boldly challenges negative energies and societal expectations. The concept of being a carefree Black girl, reclaiming agency and joy in a world that often seeks to diminish their worth. Creating a space where Black women can thrive, be celebrated, and find empowerment through art.
