ART Kits
ART KIT MISSION
In efforts to reach children at home to ensure arts education for students in Long Beach, Arts Council’s Eye on Design Artist Teacher Betty Rosen consulted with NASCO to provide quality art materials packaged safely to hand out during a pandemic. The kit contains a mosaic lesson plan inspired by mosaics and the Eye on Design curriculum. In phase one of the Art Kit Giveaway, the Arts Council Partnered with Mayor’s Fund for Education, Whittier Elementary, Houghton Park, Creative Flow, and A Future Super Hero to distribute the kits to local communities.
The community is encouraged to take a picture of their project, post it with the hashtags #artslb and #kidskitslb, and tag the Arts Council on social media. We hope you enjoy Phase 4 of our Art Kits. Our theme for this Lesson is birds. We chose this theme to help shine a light on two local art projects. First, is the new Millard Sheets Studio mosaic at the Kleefeld Museum at CSULB.
Second, a book, “Waa’aka’: The Bird Who Fell in Love with the Sun” by Cindi Lake.
For parents, teachers, and community leaders: your artists’ work may be included in future Arts Council materials, on social media, or in community art installations. Be sure to share your birds with us using the QR code, dropping them at our office, filling the form below, or posting your images on Instagram or Facebook, and tagging us @ArtsLB.

Featured Art lesson
The templates in this kit are inspired by the bird imagery from artists,
as well as local birds. This Kit will help you paint with watercolors, draw with
colored pencils, cut out geometric shapes as tesserae (Italian for any materials
used to make mosaics) and glue those shapes inside the bird templates
provided. Our hope is that you will take some time to observe the birds in your
community, see how artists view other birds and create one of your own.
