Joey Naz

The history of jazz music in the United States is a history of revolution and liberation. As an artist, musician, and performer I channel this liberation as a means of inspiring people to live their lives to their greatest extents. My work is heavily inspired by the jazz greats of history as well as the hip hop greats who came after and I do not shy away from the roots of my music. Jazz music was created by the Black American Diaspora and as a contemporary jazz musician it is my duty to not only make music that honors and acknowledges that, but also make music that is inclusive to all Black and Brown people. As a queer artist and performer, I aim to bring queerness to the front and center of every performance. All of my art, all of my music, and any space I occupy as a performer will always be a safe space for queer Black and Brown peoples.

Artist Work

Angelbaby (2021)
My favorite song I've ever written, as well as a fan favorite. A commentary on party/hookup culture, as well as a convoluted love song.

Jazz Vibraphone Examples (2021)
A collection of videos from my artist residency in LA and OC as well as some performances in Long Beach, Norwalk, and Lakewood.

Joey Naz on Instagram: "1. Captured by @twinbullcreate . I was gigging solo outside a pieshop in the Arts District for about a year straight every weekend (hella tiring). I remember loving the intimate feeling of being the only person there with the audience, feeling like I was communicating the pain and sorrow and loneliness that all of us were feeling over the pandemic. Nothing is more beautiful and healing to the soul than a beautifully sung ballad on my vibraphone. Tune: Blue In Green 2. Me and @oscatrodriguez captured by @annacrums in OC. I am so glad the pandemic hasnt stopped me from meeting new cats who are full of life and hope and happiness, and I am beyond honored to play with Oscar on multiple occassions, cuz damn, homeboys a beast. The energy we shared was not only musical but familial. Love you friend. Tune: Softly As In A Morning Sunrise 3. Linda Chicana from my Senior Recital. Not much to say other than I surprised myself with my chops that day, not trying to bloat, but trying to be honest. I sometimes lose myself in the music, but when I am lost in the music, I feel so at peace with myself. ft. @fallinjazz @bmuhawi @karo_galadjian @matty_j_bebop 4. Waltz for Debby with @bmuhawi captured by @hello.optometry. I wanted to preserve the integrity of the tune but still keep the unique quality of the vibraphone. The end result is a prepared piece that I love to play for warmups, encores, and little kids who want something cute and playful. Love you Bill, I'll forsure see you in hell tho 😐. Tune: Waltz for Debby. 5. @themodesmusic gig. If you know, you know. Check these badasses out, cuz we arent working our asses off for all of you to sleep on us. Endless nights of production and songwriting with these guys. love yall. 6. My Vibraphone named Halloween, and my shy cat named Eevee. Enough said. 7. What's New. Possibly my favorite Milt Jackson tune (at least one that he covered). For those of you that don't know, Milt Jackson is my biggest inspiration, I try to stylize myself under his influence. If it were not for this exact tune, I'm not sure I would have fallen in love with the vibraphone, let alone Jazz Music, the way that I have. That is all. - Joey Naz"
