Arts Council for Long Beach is featuring artists from our Artist Registry. For June, in celebration of PRIDE month, we are featuring artist, Victor Yates.

Victor is a black queer multidisciplinary artist in Los Angeles whose work focuses on place. His literary work centers around history, black queer representation, black identity, and the politics of sexuality. His latest media video performance, Death Sentence, (2020), which was made in direct response to the police brutality against black bodies, was awarded grants from Glendale and West Hollywood, CA, both in 2020 and 2021. Victor has also won the 2020 George Floyd Honorarium for Poetry from the Los Angeles Press, the Judith A. Markowitz Award for Emerging LGBTQ Writers and the 2016 Lambda Literary Award for LGBT Debut Fiction for his book, A Love Like Blood. In March 2021, Victor’s essay titled, The Three Picture I.D. Rule was published in the anthology, “Unheard Voices,” by IAP Press.
