James Brooks

My art making is influenced by my training as an illustrator. I like to explore the story and develop a concept. Sometimes I do this by merging visual elements to find new perspectives on a narrative. Sometimes humor and play is part of it. Another way narrative plays a role in my artwork has been in examining characters who attempt to take control of their own narrative. These works look at characters who use their personal fashion and items they carry to signify this to the world they inhabit. I particularly find inspiration for this work from real people who take control of their identity and personal histories to confront intolerance and navigate life’s obstacles.
