Hugo Lomeli

Oluwatoyin Ruth “Toyin” Salau was a 19 year old college student who disappeared the night of tweeting about being sexually assaulted. She was found murdered a week later from the date she tweeted. Acknowledging her involvement with Black Lives Matter movements in Tallahassee, Florida as an emerging leader and activist, Hugo Lomeli memorializes her existence and participation in such momentous civil uprisings by creating a full face portrait of her while having a stylized black panther emerge from the background. The serene color palette of blues, grays, whites, and blacks establish a dreamlike, nighttime beach scene creating a sense of tranquility and remembrance for a victim of needless acts of violence.
