Tijera S. Williams works predominantly stem within the media and methodologies of both painting and photography to create detailed collage and layered images. The work tackles topics that currently target the Black community in America. They are expressed in sections affecting the whole as a body, the family dynamic, personal depictions, and perceptions from those outside of the Diaspora. In her work, Williams utilizes strong color relationships and significance along with strong linear qualities to unify icons and text. By transitioning and delivering re-appropriation based ideas of famed artworks from the 14th and 16th century Italian Renaissance periods and connecting them to the current-day 21st century Afro-diasporic female worldview is a dominant theme that Williams’ work possesses. Her work holds dialogue within this classic time period while also addressing current and historical cultural conversations within and encapsulating the Black community. The most important and non-negotiable part of Williams’ practice is that it is required that any work created must relate to her personal opinions and life experiences and Black people. To be relatable to students of art history and popular art of the past as a way to break out societal constructs, Williams’ work especially exercises a critical statement that sparks emotion. The work is made from a replica of personal ideas and aesthetics. It is made to motivate and honor Black and Brown people(s) who have grown and stemmed from Amerikkka, and presented to a widely Caucasian audience.
