Mayor’s Office Partners with Arts Council For State of the Arts Event
For the first time in its history, the Arts Council for Long Beach’s annual State of the Arts event will be hosted in partnership with the Mayor’s Office. In another first, the event will be held at the Museum of Latin American Art, one of Long Beach’s outstanding cultural institutions.
“Mayor Garcia’s support helps elevate the arts throughout the city and beyond,” Arts Council President Marco Schindelmann said. “We are very grateful that he understands how incredibly important the arts are to our diverse communities.”
At the event, which takes place Friday, October 9, 2015, from 8:30–10 a.m. in the museum’s sculpture garden, the Arts Council will unveil an exciting new project as well as a new grant and partnership.
The heart of the occasion is to recognize the extraordinary work and commitment of five individuals and organizations making our city a great place to live, work and create. The award categories include: James H. Ackerman Arts Philanthropist, Arts Educator and Arts Volunteer; and two new awards this year – Arts Innovator and Economic Development Arts Trailblazer. Mayor Garcia will announce the Arts Council’s winners and present the awards at the event.
The Arts Innovator award and Mayor’s Office partnership caught the attention of the countywide Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, which is featuring the event as part of LA Innovation Week (www.innovate.la).
Live music by Long Beach’s own Jazz Angels and a continental breakfast will precede the ceremony.
“The arts not only make our communities culturally richer, they are also instrumental to education, economic development and innovation,” Garcia said. “You can’t have a successful city without a successful arts sector.”
The Museum of Latin American Art is located at 628 Alamitos Ave. in Long Beach. The admission-free event is sponsored by Tesoro, Long Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, California Resources Corporation, Plenary-Edgemoor Civic Partners, Yellow Cab Long Beach, Farmers & Merchants Bank, Keesal Young & Logan, Downtown Long Beach Associates, Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach Community Foundation, Cambodian Town Inc., Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, Uptown Property Business Improvement District, East Anaheim Street Business Alliance, TGIS Catering, Museum of Latin American Art, as well as the Long Beach Mayor’s Office and Arts Council for Long Beach.
