In conjunction with the 2023 SURBiennial, Tijuana born, Mexico City-based performance artist and rapper MUXXXE presents SEMENTERIO. SEMENTERIO –a play on words between semen and cemetery– the artist aims to lay, conceptually and metaphorically, the embodied patriarchal behaviors that coexist within them in order to heal. Considering Mexico’s alarming rates of gender-based violence, works like SEMENTERIO plays a crucial role in unravelling how machismo threatens the lives of women and queer individuals in a country that views them as disposable. In the words of the artist: With SEMENTERIO as an allegory to the death of violent heteronormative behaviors, I want to use my body, my voice, music, visuals and wearable objects as ritualistic tools to exorcise those negative traits associated with masculinity; I want to facilitate a moment of self-reflection. SEMENTERIO is a eulogy to the person I once was.
