1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture
May 3 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Event Navigation
This feature-length documentary follows the dedicated work of researchers tracing the origins of the anti-LGBTQIA+ movement among Christians, which resulted in a grave mistranslation of the Bible. The Revised Standard Version, published in 1946, was the first instance where the word “homosexual” appeared in any Bible, in any translation. Archives at Yale University, until now unseen, reveal astonishing new revelations and cast significant doubt on any biblical basis for prejudice affecting our culture, politics, religion, and the LGBTQIA+ community for hundreds of years.
The documentary received 20 awards, including the Audience Award at the 2022 DOC NYC Film Festival and The Cleveland International Film Festival, Best of Fest at the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival, 2023 Hot Spring Docs Audience Award, and the 2023 OUTfest LA’s Audience Award for Best Documentary. The film’s director, Sharon “Rocky” Roggio, and head researcher for the film, Ed Oxford, will be in attendance for the screening at First Church and conduct a Q&A following the presentation.
