Andres Trujillo

Andres grew up in Houston, Texas. A fine place with fine people and great food. He began studying music at the age of eleven where he picked up the euphonium. Upon seeing the Houston Symphony orchestra perform live for the first time, he knew at that exact moment in Gustav Holst’s The Planets, that he wanted to be a professional musician. Andres then, under the advice of his middle school band director, switched to tuba. That same year, he would pick up bass guitar to supplement his itch for learning Black American Music.

After leaving the Lone Star state, Andres studied at Boston University with Mike Roylance of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After surviving the dreaded fundamental routine of Thunderdome™, he moved to the west coast to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Jeff Anderson of the San Francisco Symphony. At the end of his time at SFCM he found his two true loves, A mezzo named Molly and New Orleans Brass Band music. He is now engaged to one of them.

Andres joined the NOLA style brass band, Brass Band Mission, and became the tubist, arranger and composer of the group. They recorded one album in the Hyde Street studio in the Tenderloin District, the self-titled Brass Band Mission.

Out of sheer dumb luck, Andres was traveling through Southern California where he heard about a popular theme park auditioning for a band down in Anaheim. He took that audition and won a part-time weekend position. As tempting as it was to pay twice the rent and continue to get half the work in San Francisco, he made the fateful leap to becoming an Angelino (well, okay, a Long Beachian).

During the time that Andres traded zip codes, he’s performed and recorded with artists such as: Deadmau5, That Dog, Queens of the Stone Age, Weird Al Yankovich, Halsey and H. Jon Benjamin. Andres performs regularly with several different groups including, but not limited to: The Disneyland Band, The Main Street Straw Hatters, The San Diego Chameleons, LA Marching Band, Sea Funk Brass Band, The Holy Crow Jazz Band, Shiri and the Shiribims, The Big Butter Jazz Band, and the Western Standard Time Orchestra.

Andres also manages and co-directs several projects and ensembles, namely, The New Nine Jazz Ensemble, Pied Agites and The Zinc and Copper Project. Aside from juggling musical interests, he also enjoys juggling hobbies (depending on which season we’re in). To name a few, gardening, hiking, skim boarding and cooking.
