Born on 1979 in Los Angeles. Hembert Guardado received his Bachelors
Degree in Fine Arts at California State University of Los Angeles in
2004. He has displayed in the following galleries: Avenue 50 Studio,
The Hive Gallery, and Cannibal Flowers. Guardado is a mixed media
artist. The purpose with Guardado art is creating high contrast images
that are distorted to create not one but several images. Some of
Guardado methods are using adhesive to distort an image, creating peep
boxes, and building several layers of paint. Guardado paints on wooden
board and the materials he uses are acrylics, oils, spray cans,
adhesives, and bondo. Artist that have influenced him are Basquiat,
Swoon, Julian Schnabel, Robert Rauschenberg, and a quote from
Shklovsky. The purpose of art is to impart the sensation of things as
they are perceived and not as they are known. The technique of art is
to make objects ‘unfamiliar,’ to make forms difficult to increase the
difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception
is an aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged. Art is a way of
experiencing the artfulness of an object; the object is not important.
(Shklovsky, “Art as Technique”, 12)
