Phil Warren – 3.8 Billion Dollar Art Show – OCT 10th
December 10, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Event Navigation

An art show featuring so much art that the art is the medium for more art.
Every piece is constructed entirely out of NFTs- “Non-Fungible Tokens”, a piece of art inextricably tied to a digital identifier that can be viewed, and even downloaded, by anyone in the public. In this case, the artist downloaded half a million NFTs, worth 3.8 billion dollars, from OpenSea.io, the largest marketplace for NFTs. OpenSea, when presented with a description of the project, provided support in the form of an API key allowing for this download.
Each piece is only listed as having a value if the NFT used was sold- if they weren’t sold at the time of download, they were given a value of zero, and not factored into the tally of the piece.
The ownership is, seemingly, poorly understood, because this art movement actually brokers in tokens that are little more than URLs, unconnected to the publicly visible art… yet these pieces sell for astronomical prices
This is a playful deconstruction of the current digital art environment, and a discussion of worth, artistic ownership, and even the responsibility of the artist. It is a juxtaposition between what art is and what art isn’t- a conversation about the difference between fair use and exploitation.
Is value the same as worth? Is art on a canvas inherently more artful? Is Phil Warren an artistic genius?
The answer to all these questions is probably a resounding yes.
