The Historical Society of Long Beach is proud to partner with the Black Student Union Elders Association (BSUEA) in a series of free webinars. Speakers and moderators will honor Dr. Joseph L. White, explore the creation of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), and relay first-hand stories of early EOP participants. The series is “inspired by the BSUEA collection, ‘Legacy, Celebration and Remembrance,’ a stunning visual display of minority faculty and student activism during the mid-1960s into the 1970s.”
The EOP is a nationally implemented program created by Dr. White at CSULB more than 50 years ago. They help first-generation, low-income, and historically disadvantaged students gain admission to college, and offer programs encouraging retention such as mentorship, academic advising, tutoring, workshops, financial aid counseling, and a strong community of peer-to-peer advocates.

Dr. White, one of the first African American psychologists to hold a Ph.D. in the United States, gained national prominence in 1970 with his article “Toward a Black Psychology” (Ebony Magazine, 1970). His work at CSULB and CSU Irvine helped thousands of students in California and beyond flourish in the often-hostile environments of university campuses, and to network and pursue professional careers.
