Hitchcock’s THE LODGER – silent film – Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble – Live Score

August 23 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Join us for Alfred Hitchcock’s chilling 1927 masterpiece “The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog” starring Ivor Novello. Blondes! Dancing girls! A serial killer who strikes on Tuesday nights!

ABOUT THE LODGER: A STORY OF THE LONDON FOG

Every Tuesday night, a beautiful blonde is murdered by “The Avenger.” When a mysterious stranger moves in with Daisy Bunting and her parents, his nighttime outings raise suspicions. Who is he? Can you ever truly know someone who lives under your own roof?

Hitchcock’s 1927 silent film, his first thriller, directed at the age of 27, already bears trademarks of his mature style: Blondes! A serial killer! Homosexuality! Women changing! A blonde taking a bath! A Hitch cameo! Pre-code (and British), it shows us murder weapons, deep kissing, and aggressive men.

The film is filled with technical marvels of its day: Behold a news bureau’s telegraph machine! Behold listeners getting news, wirelessly, over the aerial! Flashing electric light signs, telephones, and massive printing presses! For cineastes, there are famous shots: a disembodied hand descends a banister; a glass ceiling reveals footfalls one story above.

Interviewed in 1966 on Granada TV, Hitch said the film shows a “strong German influence” from his work at UFA. Hitch wanted the lodger’s footsteps to haunt the film, which inspired the famous glass floor shot: “That’s the visual interpretation of the missing sound of those days… A man is pacing a room up and down… The substitute for that was a visual impression… I did it by having a floor made of one-inch-thick glass.”
