Visual artist Betsy Lohrer Hall offers meditative experiences focused on sound receptivity and senses of place.

Visual artist Betsy Lohrer Hall’s project, Here Hear, is a series of sound-sensitive, site-interactive activities that will take place in and around Angels Gate Cultural Center (Building H) from April 9 through June 4 as part of soundpedro 2022.

Email betsylohrerhall@gmail.com with questions or to reserve your spot. If you’re signing up, please include your full name, phone number… and if you’re coming with friends, how many in your group. Thank you.

As one aspect of this, the artist is offering opportunities to participate in meditative sound experiences. This is an invitation to temporarily set aside our usual activities—to deliberately slow down and focus on the present moment: the physical body, in real time; the direct perception of sound and nature. We will pay close attention to ambient and found sounds and how we receive them. Participants may be surprised to discover where they experience sound in their bodies and how their minds engage with and wander away from the present moment. The activities introduced and practiced here can be used by participants, going forward, as resources in support of health and well-being.

FREE. No previous meditation experience is necessary. You’re welcome to join us for one workshop or both. Each session includes a brief artist talk, guided meditation, independent sound experience, creative response, and opportunity for dialogue.

All are welcome, though the activity is ideally suited for those over 12 years old.

About the Artist:

Visual artist Betsy Lohrer Hall makes works on paper, installations, and site-specific interactive projects. She has a longstanding interest in process and impermanence; this is expressed in a variety of ways, from delicate repeated marks on paper, to her use of simple, fragile materials such as thread, eggshells, or collected, cast off objects. Since 2002 her artwork has been increasingly influenced by sound and multi-sensory perception. She earned her MFA in drawing and painting from California State University, Fullerton, and her BA in studio art from Colorado College. Based in Long Beach, California, she has exhibited her work in solo and group shows along the west coast of the U.S., in Thailand and Taiwan. She is a 2022 Professional Artist Fellowship recipient from the Arts Council of Long Beach, a grant made possible in part by the City of Long Beach and the National Endowment for the Arts.
