An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, happening 4 times
Healing Elements And Lifeways (HEAL) – Medicine Wheel Workshop Series is a free four-part series, featuring a session on each medicine wheel element (Fire, Earth, Water, Air), related to aspects of wellbeing (Emotional, Mental, Physical, Spiritual) for this May is Mental Health Month 2021. As American Indian/Alaska Natives experience vast mental and physical health disparities due to continued effects of historical/intergenerational trauma and colonization, we offer these workshops to strengthen our connection to community, nature and the four elements. We gather to celebrate and honor our resilience as Native/Indigenous people, as we transition from surviving this past year of pandemic, social unrest, loss and uncertainty. These workshops aim to foster our use of community, the elements, songs and medicines for healing, as we continue to emerge in changing times.
HEAL Workshop Series is partnered with Los Angeles-based Indigenous artist Tekpatl Kuauhtzin (Nawa & Baja Kwapa), whose visual imagery relates to the HEAL Workshop series, with focus on the elements. Tekpatl’s art will help to grow awareness for May is Mental Health Month, and the importance of strengthening our connection with the elements, culture and traditions in healing.
This program is a part of the “Bridging Wellness” series of community pop-ups generously supported by WE RISE LA in partnership with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. “Bridging Wellness” is a collaborative effort by Angels Gate Cultural Center, Arts Council for Long Beach, Compound LB and 10 other organizations and artists in the Harbor Region. WE RISE encourages wellbeing and healing through art, connection, community engagement and creative expression throughout May, Mental Health Awareness Month. WE RISE includes Art Rise, a series of 21 art experiences; Community Pop-Ups, hyperlocal activities across Los Angeles County neighborhoods; and a robust Digital Experience, offering original programs that can be enjoyed from anywhere. All installations and activities are meant to be participated in online or viewed from a distance individually or in small groups, in order to remain COVID-safe while fostering community connection and collective healing.
