Using reference images and memories from spaces I have inhabited, I attempt to capture feelings of solitude and isolation that arise from particular light conditions and times of day and night. I am interested in the patterns of behavior that develop over time within, and as a result of, the particularities of a physical space. I aim to highlight the psychological states that oftentimes last minutes but feel like they stretch over long periods of time.
I emphasize natural and artificial light sources to evoke moments of time and as evidence of the figure’s presence. Editing is done throughout the process to reduce and add information while leaving traces of an occupant’s lived experience. Shifts in color, light, and architectural structure are made intuitively to slightly fracture the original composition into a more dream-like state. I hope these paintings initiate a feeling of familiarity, and that viewers can reflect on how their environments affect their solitary reflections on life.
